to apply for design studies at fh dusseldorf the task was to create a work on the topic of artistic/artificial intelligence with no further restrictions. i dispensed with complex postulates and focused on simple artificial intelligence, like lawn mowing robots. i wondered what would happen if we granted these robots their very own personality. thus i created a display cabinet designed as a piece of packaging for a robot mower. a hole to look through exists on both sides with a light switch. the person looking through the first hole can see the robot having erratically mowed the lawn. from this point of view, the artificial intelligence has failed. yet looking through the second window, one can see the mowing route displayed as an artwork. so if one looks at the robot in a different way, it can also be an artist — an artistic intelligence. it only depends on the point of view.
